La sfârşitul anilor 30, firma Bayerische Motoren Werke, pe scurt BMW, a devenit unul dintre cei mai prestigioşi producători de automobile din Germania. În doar zece ani BMW a reuşit să devină dintr-un producător sub licenţă de maşini mici, obişnuite, într-un producător de automobile care oferea o variată gamă de performante maşini sport. Când în 1937 BMW s-a aventurat în segmentul performant de lux, odată cu lansarea lui 327, o maşină convertibilă, care a fost la scurt timp urmată de o elegantă versiune coupé şi o berlină era singurul model neinclus încă în acest portofoliu.
